Frequently Asked Questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. FyleTools processes everything directly in your browser using WebAssembly technology. Your file never leaves your device, making it completely safe for sensitive documents.
Can I extract non-consecutive pages?
The Split tool extracts a continuous range of pages. For selecting individual non-consecutive pages, use our Organize PDF tool which lets you pick and reorder specific pages.
Does splitting affect the quality of my PDF?
No. The split operation extracts the original page data without re-encoding. All text, images, fonts, and formatting are preserved exactly as they were.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
You need to unlock the PDF first. Use our Unlock PDF tool to remove the password, then split the unprotected file.
Are bookmarks preserved in split PDFs?
The split creates a new PDF with the selected pages. Bookmarks referencing pages outside the range may not be preserved.
Does this work on my phone?
Yes. The tool works on any device with a modern browser. Upload your PDF, enter the page range, and download the result.
Can I split a large PDF into equal parts?
Set the page ranges manually. For example, to split a 100-page PDF into quarters, extract pages 1-25, 26-50, 51-75, and 76-100.
Can I split a PDF into individual pages?
Yes. Use the "Every N" mode with a value of 1 to create a separate PDF for each page. All files are packaged as a ZIP download.
Does splitting affect hyperlinks in the PDF?
Links within the extracted page range are preserved. Links pointing to pages outside the range will no longer work in the split file.
Can I split a very large PDF (500+ pages)?
Yes. Since processing happens in your browser, large files work fine on devices with sufficient memory. Allow a few extra seconds for very large documents.
How do I split a PDF and keep the table of contents?
Include the table of contents pages in your selected range. Bookmarks pointing outside the range may not be preserved in the extracted file. Learn more in our PDF splitting guide.

Splitting PDF: browser vs server

Splitting a PDF or extracting specific pages can be done in your browser (like FyleTools) or by uploading the document to a server. The local approach keeps the file on your device.

Browser-Based (FyleTools)

  • The PDF never leaves your device — split legal or medical documents with full privacy
  • Extract page ranges or separate every page with no size limits
  • Instant page preview and selection, no queues
  • No account or sign-up; works offline after loading
  • Bundles multiple outputs into a ZIP automatically
  • Free, no watermarks

Server-Based Alternatives

  • Require uploading the whole document to the server
  • Size and page limits on free plans
  • Wait times depending on service load
  • Often require an account for multiple downloads
  • Some offer splitting by bookmarks or text OCR
  • Batch splitting reserved for premium plans

How It Works — 100% Private Processing

FyleTools splits your PDF entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and the lopdf library compiled from Rust. The splitting algorithm extracts the selected pages from the original PDF data without re-encoding — preserving all text, images, and formatting exactly. Your document never leaves your device.
